McKnight Hockey Organization 101
It might be worthwhile to provide a refresher for all McKnight Hockey members about the structure of McKnight Hockey and the history of how this has evolved. McKnight Hockey is made up of four associations (CHC, CNC, TG and SMHC). Players in McKnight actually are members of one of the four associations who then pool their players to form McKnight Hockey to play within Hockey Calgary. Even though you may have registered on-line through McKnight Hockey, you are a member of one of the four associations by virtue of the community that you live in. While this sounds very complicated, it came about as a result of the history of the associations. Each of the associations used to compete on their own within Hockey Calgary (with the exception of SMHC which used to be part of Simons Valley Hockey Association).
All of the associations have been merged into McKnight as part of Hockey Calgary's boundary reviews and an ongoing effort within HC to maintain a competitive balance. HC continues to look at association boundaries in an attempt to keep competitive balance and to ensure that associations have sufficient registration to allow for proper placement of players and teams.
There are also some organizational issues that must be considered with respect to the communities that form each of these associations and their relationships with the community rinks. We are in a unique situation where three of the associations have a community rink within their boundaries. Each of the communities has different requirements for membership and fundraising. This is why we have kept this structure in place. This is a similar structure to other associations who have community owned rinks within their boundaries (for example: Westwood Hockey Association).
Each of the four associations nominates three candidates to serve on the Board of Directors of McKnight Hockey.
The other benefit of having four associations is that each can manage their own fundraising and setting of fees. Each of the four associations can work to create fundraising opportunities including casinos, bingos, etc. SMHC had been rejected in an application for a casino in 2011 and as a result, it has been decided that the two casino slots for McKnight will be shared amongst CHC, CNC and SMHC starting in 2012. This structure has allowed the various associations within McKnight to keep their fees among the lowest in Calgary.
